The Story of ShelterWings Foundation

In 2015, a simple but powerful idea was born at 214 North Tryon Street, Charlotte, North Carolina, 28202: “Every child deserves safety, dignity, and love—no matter their background.” Five compassionate visionaries came together, united by a shared burden for children without families or support. These founders were: Robert Michael, Karl Heinrich, Etienne Marcel, Stefan Matteo, and Tshepo Tumelo Their paths were different, but their hearts beat the same. After witnessing the suffering of abandoned and vulnerable children both in the U.S. and abroad, they made a life-changing decision: to create a home where children could rediscover hope. With limited resources but unwavering faith, they established ShelterWings Foundation, beginning with a small team and a handful of children in Charlotte.

The early years were not easy. Funds were scarce. Facilities were small. Resources were stretched thin. Yet, the founders refused to give up. They believed deeply that love, compassion, and commitment could build something great—even from nothing. The organization survived its toughest moments because of the selflessness of volunteers, the sacrifice of the founders, and the kindness of early donors who believed in the mission.
